The Faculty of Theology at the University of Aarhus has received a grant of DKK 1 million (approximately EUR 135,000) to set up a new two-year Master’s degree programme. The grant was provided by the Nordic Council of Ministers, which wants to establish joint Nordic Master’s degree programmes at a high international level, designed to be competitive in the modern international education market. The degree programme was selected from 41 other projects applying for this grant.
The Faculty of Theology in Aarhus developed the degree programme in collaboration with several other Nordic educational institutions, which now form a consortium. This provides the framework for the practical implementation of the degree programme. At the Faculty of Theology in Aarhus, this degree programme has links with the research project Religion and normativity , which is one of the research priority areas at the University of Aarhus.
The new degree programme is called Master in The Religious Roots of Europe , and it involves specialised studies in the foundation of the three major European religions – Christianity, Judaism and Islam – and the interaction between them. The aim is to educate graduates who, based on specialist knowledge regarding the conflict and interaction between these three religions, can perform a number of functions within public administration, consultancy, etc., where religion is involved in some way or another. The degree programme is also intended to produce graduates with research potential.
The degree programme is open to international students and all instruction is therefore carried out in English.Students will be recruited from Denmark and abroad. Web-based teaching combined with intensive instruction periods will make it possible for the students to retain their permanent addresses throughout the Nordic countries and the rest of Europe. Other students are expected to stay at one of the participating universities in the Nordic countries.
