The only place in Denmark where Theology and the Study of Religion are studied in the same academic environment is at the Faculty of Theology, University of Aarhus. This gives the Faculty of Theology a unique profile and serves to spur the mutual challenge and inspiration between these two fields of study as well as a fruitful co-operation in many contexts. The combination of Theology and the Study of Religion thus provides a perfect framework of the interdisciplinary study of religions and religious phenomena in their various contexts, which is the mission of the PhD school.
The theology research unit comprises the Department of Biblical Studies, the Department of Church History and the Department of Systematic Theology. The characteristics of these departments are an interaction between historical, literary and systematic methods with particular focus on
The study of religion research unit is united in the Department of the Study of Religion , also including Arabic Language and Islamic Culture. This research unit covers subjects and disciplines in the humanities and the social sciences with focus on, for instance, theories of religion, comparative studies of religion, sociology and psychology of religion, and philosophy of religion.
It is the aim of the PhD School of Religion/Identity/Culture to give higher priority to the PhD programme by integrating this in the research undertaken at the Faculty.
